CLUB NEWS NO 8 – 24th August ‘17

World Loppet skiers will be arriving early next week to add to the dozens of elite skiers already here for the Winter Games. There are social occasions that Club Members can be involved in, whether you are doing the race or not. Firstly, Social Drinks and Dinner at the Lake Bar in Wanaka, Thursday 31st August. Drinks from 5.30pm and Dinner at 6pm, menu to suit all pockets. Come and mix and mingle with these folk who have skied around the world and back, some of them not so young either! Next, the Skiers Lunch at Snow Farm Lodge, Friday 1st Sept at 1pm (time to be confirmed). Cost is $25. And if you are skiing one of the races on M/M day, you are invited to the After-race Dinner at Cardrona Hotel, Sat evening – own cost. Bookings must be made for Fri’s lunch and Sat’s dinner –
If you are still contemplating Volunteering, just do it! It’s a lot of fun to be involved in the Big Day in some way. You don’t have to be a skier to volunteer – maybe a friend might like to!

Is there anyone not working who would like to be there to meet and greet skiers on Friday 1st September (next week) and pass on info they need? I think the other days of the week are covered. Please contact me if you would be free. A wonderful chance to chat with these Master Skiers.

XC Races will be on Thurs 7th, Fri 8th and Sat 9th. Thurs – Freestyle 5/10km, Fri – Classic Sprint, Sat – Classic Mass Start 10/15km, each day from 9am to 1.30pm. These races will be great preparation for the Winter Olympics in Peyong Chang, Korea, next February. Come and witness some fantastic skiing. Bring your cow bells!

A delightful lunch at Meadow Hut was had by about a dozen people last Tuesday, plus a toddy or two! Alexei asked me to say a big thankyou to everyone who helped his stay at the Snow Farm this season to be a most memorable one. On our part, we are thankful that he continues to come (11 years now!) and help our skiing reach the next level. It doesn’t happen overnight, but it IS happening!

For last Saturday’s Waiorau Classic 6km and 20km are on the verandah noticeboard. Congratulations to Thelma, Mary and Kathy D who skied the whole distance when they only intended to ski 6km!

This is on 16th September, same day as the Schools’ Championships. We’ll try to get it done at lunchtime. Please consider taking either Secretary or Treasurer position. We feel it’s time for new blood and ideas! Put your name forward and make our Club work even better. Could all existing Committee Members let me know if they are happy to remain.

Friday 29th Sept at 5pm, Snow Sports Office, 78 Anderson Road, Wanaka. For more info – You may wonder what Snow Sports has to do with us, but they are the umbrella organisation for all snow sports, and help fund some of our kids’ programmes. We have a small Committee who confer with Snow Sports on our behalf, and provide a voice for XC skiing. You do need to be a financial member of Snow Sports to vote at the AGM tho.

The snow is still fantastic, so there is plenty of skiing left yet! Enjoy it while it lasts.
